Trials and Tragedies

Dear Northside

Over the past several years, and especially in recent days, we’ve been reminded of how fragile life is, and how deeply heavy and heartbreaking it can feel. Whether it’s personal loss, national tragedy, or a quiet ache we carry alone, the weight of this world has a way of knocking the wind out of us.

Why does God allow Trials and Tragedies?

The Bible does not shy away from tough subjects like this. In fact, I believe it is the only religion (if you can call Christianity a religion) that gives an adequate answer to the problem of pain.

In the book of Job, we see the problem of Trials and Tragedies dealt with honesty and hope, reminding us that while we can’t escape suffering, we never face it alone. God is ever present, ever faithful, and always good, no matter what life throws our way.

And we will see the same thing in Ruth. In our preaching series “Redeeming Grace: The Gospel in Ruth”, we will see loss and scarcity and grief. But through it all, we see God in the background. He is always there. We also see the power of faithful community. Each one of us is called to be faithful in tough times and to continue to look for God in all situations and to look for ways to be a blessing to others. And if we are faithful, God will redeem us and give us a legacy.

Whether you’re counselling or showing up for someone in need this week, you’ll find encouragement and truth in this timely message. It’s a tender reminder that the same God who allowed Job’s suffering never left his side. And He won’t leave yours, either.

We held the Newcomers Tea for the 3rd term. Thanks to the welcome and décor teams for setting everything up. And thanks to the leaders who also attended. Our deep desire is to see first-time guests become active members of the Northside family. If you are new or even newish, welcome. We are so glad you are with us. The church is a wonderful gift from God. If you have never attended a Newcomers Tea, then look out for the next one next term.

The Love Zimbabwe Festival is this coming weekend at the Zimbabwe Grounds. I know this is on the other side of the city. If you can go, please do and let us know how it was. We probably will not see any direct impact on us here in the northern suburbs, but we can still pray that thousands and hundreds of thousands of people will hear the Gospel and will respond to Jesus. Pray for all the organisers and all the volunteers. 70 people have flown in to help run the festival. Pray for the churches that are given the names of people who responded to the Gospel, that they will disciple them effectively. Pray that whole communities and our city will be transformed by the power of the Gospel.

God bless, Pastor Gary
