Dear Northside
Last week a devotion was given on the Doulos WhatsApp group. I thought it was very useful for our Church annual theme and also for our time of Lent.
The Benefits of Walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25)
“The benefits of walking in the Spirit are not only the fruits of peace, love, and joy, but also the presence of God in our everyday moments.” – Unknown
Choose one area in your life where you want to see the fruit of the Spirit grow. Whether it’s love, patience, joy, or self-control, invite the Holy Spirit to work in that area today and trust Him to transform you.
Walking in the Spirit is not just a command, but a blessing that brings profound benefits to our lives. When we choose to walk by the Spirit, we open ourselves up to the fullness of God’s guidance, power, and peace.
There are countless benefits to living a life led by the Spirit, but let’s reflect on a few key ones:
- Victory Over the Flesh
When we walk in the Spirit, we gain the power to overcome the desires of the flesh. The Bible tells us that the flesh and the Spirit are in constant opposition (Galatians 5:17). However, walking in the Spirit empowers us to resist temptation and live in alignment with God’s will. We are no longer slaves to our old nature.
- Transformation of Character
The Holy Spirit works in us to produce the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These characteristics are not achieved through willpower or effort, but through the transforming work of the Spirit within us. The more we walk in the Spirit, the more our character reflects Christ’s likeness.
- Peace and Guidance
Walking in the Spirit brings peace because it aligns us with God’s perfect will. The Spirit leads us in making decisions that honour God and guide us into truth. In moments of confusion or doubt, the Holy Spirit provides clarity and peace, reassuring us that we are on the right path.
- Strength for the Journey
Life often brings challenges, but the Holy Spirit gives us strength to endure. He equips us to face trials with courage and perseverance. When we rely on the Spirit, we are reminded that we do not face difficulties alone—God’s presence gives us the strength we need.
- Intimacy with God
Walking in the Spirit deepens our relationship with God. The Spirit speaks to our hearts, leads us into worship, and helps us hear God’s voice more clearly. Our fellowship with God becomes more intimate as we align ourselves with His will.
- Be Sensitive to the Spirit: Throughout your day, be attentive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. When you sense His guidance, follow it in obedience, knowing that He leads you toward good.
- Cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit: Ask God to help you grow in the fruit of the Spirit. If you struggle with patience, kindness, or self-control, invite the Holy Spirit to develop those traits in you
- Rely on God’s Strength: In times of difficulty, remember that you have the Holy Spirit within you, empowering you to overcome. Lean on His strength, not your own.
Father God, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. We are grateful for the transformation, peace, and strength You provide as we walk in Your Spirit. Help us to be sensitive to Your guidance, to live in victory over the flesh, and to bear the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. May our walk with You be one of constant surrender, growing in intimacy with You every day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
